Camp Description
The Oakville Suzuki Performing Arts Camp (day camp) was founded in 1980 by Jean Grieve and has grown from 50 campers to more than 300 each summer.  This dynamic program attracts students, teachers, and guest conductors from throughout the world.

Beginner to advanced students are welcome and those learning by both the Suzuki method and RCM method can be accommodated.

Our camp coordination is much like a school system whereby campers have individual schedules and move from class to class independently.  This is why campers ages 7 and under MUST be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.  Assistance is available for parents with more than one child.

Parents choose an appropriate program for their child's age and ability to handle a half or full day of camp.  See Program section for complete details

  • Early Childhood Music (6 months - 3.5 years of age; one hour daily class)
  • Junior Program (4 - 5 years of age; morning only)
  • Intermediate Program (5 - 8 years of age; morning to early afternoon)
  • Senior Program (7 - 16 years of age; all day)
  • Chamber Program (for the advanced musician; afternoon only)

Individual camper schedules feature private instruction in one or two choices of cello, fiddle,  flute, guitar, piano, recorder, violin, viola, or voice.  Complimenting this will be a combination of classes in art, dance, drama, Kodaly, instrumental group, music theory, orff, percussion, recorder, ukulele, and more.  Our camp also offers students the chance to participate in two levels of Orchestras, several Chamber Ensembles and Choirs, as well as Music Theatre.

Course Descriptions (click for pdf download to view and/or print)

Note: TJ McAvaney's private lessons are limited to 15 minute slots and may be restricted to Book 2 & above. An additional $60 per week is applicable when selecting TJ as your teacher request.

Although each camper will receive a 15 minute private music lesson, extended lesson times and second instrument choice are available for an additional fee. Extended lessons are recommended for students in Suzuki book 4 or RCM grade 4 and above.

Campers are able to request a teacher for private lessons (depending on availability).

Group classes range from 30 - 45 minutes in length. A 15 minute break is usually included in each program. Intermediate and Senior programs also have a lunch break.

Camper schedule start and finish times may vary depending on his/her courses. Those
requesting extended lessons and/or multiple instruments may start earlier or end later.

Campers must leave the school within 15 minutes after the end of their program unless they are waiting for a sibling. Parents must sign their children in and out.

We will be emailing camper schedules in advance; however, new campers are encouraged to pick up their child's ID tag and tour the school Friday, July 2 or Saturday, July 3 prior to camp.

Tip: The open course options help the coordinator in planning the camper's schedule. It is best to fill out the Chart on the registration form completely to ensure that the camper is not enrolled in a class he/she does NOT want.

The schedule will be the same every day of the week. For campers attending both weeks, we try to include some alternate classes for week 2.   We try to work in as many preferred classes as possible around the camper's private and group lesson.  If we cannot fit a preferred class into the schedule or the class is already full, then we look to the camper's second choices.  This is why it is good to send in the forms early - it provides a better chance of getting the optional courses you want.

Childcare

Childcare for young siblings and babies is available free of charge.  Strollers are not permitted in the classrooms but can be left in the 'stroller parking lane'.  Parents are asked to take disruptive babies and toddlers outside of the class.  Contact us if you have any questions.

Performance opportunities
Each week the campers will perform for adoring parents, peers, and teachers.

Teacher & Helper Concert - Thursday evening, week 2 only
Open Concerts - campers are invited to perform for their peers every day at lunch (12:15-12:45pm)
Piano Recitals - scheduled one day during the week (Thursday or Friday)
Drama Performance - during class time on Thursday or Friday
Final Concert - Beginners perform Thursday at lunchtime & more advanced students on Friday lunchtime/early afternoon
Musical Theatre Performance - Friday afternoon
Schedules will be available and posted at camp

Instrument Rentals
It is recommended that campers trying an instrument for the first time at camp rent an instrument.  This should be arranged in advance.  Please
contact us for more information.

The Sound Post will have a temporary location at the camp.  Music books and CDs can be purchased here along with recorders and other items.

Program Descriptions

Choose the appropriate program based on your child's age and ability to handle a half or full day program.  A child's music education experience is not a factor with the exception of the Chamber Program which requires a level of Suzuki Book 4 or RCM Grade 4 or above.

Only Intermediate and Senior campers have the ability to select open course preferences.

Program information subject to change based on actual student enrollment and scheduling needs.

0 – 3 years
Parent or caregiver must attend with the child (one adult per child)
One 60 minute class per day (9:30-10:30am)
Class Description:  Musical instruction for babies and toddlers. Readiness for instrumental lessons.

The course is based on the Suzuki Early Childhood Education program and is a well-paced series of traditional songs and rhymes, which are used as stimulus for movement, singing and percussion playing.

Shinichi Suzuki actually believed in "Ability Development from Age 0" as one of his books is titled. Babes in arms are more than welcome in the class and can benefit from the music and movement in the class. The class has been designed to have a family grouping with young infants up to toddlers. Infants observe the older children and learn from them while the older children in the class learn to be sensitive to the younger children.
